Overflow // What Fills Up Your Cup?
Psalm 23:5
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
We’ve heard the saying often, “My cup runneth over,” or something of the sort. You may visualize a dish under the sink with water flowing out, a garden hose spilling onto fresh cut grass, or a child playing in the pool filling up different toys. However, what does this saying mean in a Biblical sense? What does the Psalmist mean when he praises God saying, “My cup overflows?” And how can we say the same things in or about our lives?
To understand overflow, we first have to identify our need to be filled. As we are well aware, we cannot satisfy our needs by ourselves — we need the salvation of the Perfect Lamb to do that. God knew we would never be able to fill up our lives with grace, love, peace, and joy without a relationship with Him. He is the one who provides all blessings in which our cup can be filled. Without this realization, our cup will never be filled — we will always be chasing after things that will disappear in the blink of an eye.
Only when we accept a relationship with the Father, through the acceptance of His Son, can we begin to tap into the abundance Christ promises us. Our spirit was made to crave Him, and the more we fill ourselves with His presence, the fuller our cup becomes. Now, there absolutely will still be burned out, stressful feelings in our lives, but the peace that runs through us through the grace of Christ allows us to remove unwanted feelings and replace them with Christ-filled hope and joy. Let’s find ways this summer to dig into the love of Christ to fill our cup and tap less into the feelings of the world.
Personal Prayer:
Heavenly Father, where in my life is my cup running dry? Where am I feeling abundance? Reveal to me these areas that I need to focus on in restoring my bone-dry cup for Your abundant love and grace.
